Learning Services provides academic success services to students seeking to improve their academic performance, students with academic difficulties, and students with learning differences such as learning disabilities or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Position Responsibilities:
- Lead one-on-one or small group lessons;
- Help students understand key concepts learned in class;
- Assist students with homework, projects, and test preparation;
- Teach students study strategies that will help academic performance including reading strategies, note taking strategies, and test preparation;
- Utilize listening and questioning strategies as the primary tutoring method;
- Participate in tutor training and ongoing professional development to improve tutoring skills, cultural competence, and reflection skills;
- Refer students to other campus resources as needed;
- Maintain records of attendance and assist with program evaluation;
- Work on other projects assigned by the Tutor Coordinator or Associate Director.
Required Skills/Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled at George Mason University.
- Minimum 3.0 GPA.
- A- or better in ACCT 203 and ACCT 303
- Reference from a School of Business faculty member
- Reliable, responsible, self-motivated, confident, sincere, flexible, dedicated, and considerate.
- Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Take initiative and utilize creative thinking skills and consider multiple issues, needs, possibilities, etc.
- Have an ability to relate to people from diverse backgrounds.
- Exhibit exceptional professionalism and a strong work ethic.
- Available and accessible for the time commitment involved.
- Previous tutoring or teaching experience preferred.
Time Commitments:
The position is designed for an 8-10 hour per week work commitment. Must be available to attend training.
Compensation:
This position is a 4-month contract (January 23, 2023 to May 15, 2023) with the possibility of renewal for a second academic year. Pay rate is $15 per hour for undergrad tutor and $20 per hour for grad tutor.
